The Secret of Homeschooling High Schoolers

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Homeschooling high schoolers can be an intimidating prospect even for parents who’ve been homeschooling for a long time. Many parents decide to put their children back in the public school system when their children reach this age. But is this the correct thing to do? Let’s look at why some parents make this decision and address some of the issues.

Some parents decide to stop homeschooling during the high school years because they fear for their children’s social evolvement. Although social skills are a concern even in the elementary years of homeschooling, they do become even more of an issue in the high school years. This is when children become more attached to friends and begin to form social groups. But there are many ways to ensure that your child’s social skills evolvement does not diminish even during the important high school years. First, allow and encourage your child to participate in social clubs, sporting events, camps and scouting groups. Participating in such events will help your child share experiences with others, form leadership skills and foster a sense of belonging.

Some parents worry about the level of science and math taught in high school grades. If a particular subject is not in your area of strength, don’t give up on homeschooling during the high school years altogether; instead get a tutor. If money is a hurdle, consider a barter arrangement, where you exchange tutoring services with another homeschooling parent. Although homeschooling becomes more of a challenge once you hit the high school years, it’s no reason to give up. Remember all the reasons why you started homeschooling. I’m sure many of those advantages to homeschooling still apply in the high school years. Remember to continue seeking the support you need to help you confront the challenges of homeschooling high schoolers.

Carpal Tunnel Exercise #3: The Clock

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Stand close to the wall, facing it. Cup your hands into C’s and hold them above your head, arms straight, so that the two C’s face one another. Now move as close to the wall as is comfortable, keeping your posture straight, head over shoulders, over hips, over knees, over ankles. Slowly move your arms down into the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions. Hold this position for at least a 20 count, a full minute if you can. Slowly move your arms into the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions. Hold. Now relax. Repeat. With this exercise, gradually move closer to the wall, and hold your positions longer until you can hold them a full minute. Stop whatever you’re doing if you suddenly feel pain anywhere. This carpal tunnel exercise corrects asymmetrical posture problems.

None of these carpal tunnel exercises should cause you any pain. If you experience pain during any of these, stop doing it immediately, try the others for a while, and then go back to the exercise that hurt. If it still causes you pain, see your doctor.

Trumpette Socks Stay Put so Your Baby Doesn’t Have to

Monday, March 31st, 2008

My readers know that I love to review baby products when a good one comes across my desk. This is where my job intersects with my home life, and that means a personal recommendation.

So, if you’re a parent, and you have ever had difficulties (ie screaming at inanimate objects) with keeping your baby’s socks on their feet, then I highly recommend taking a look at Trumpette socks. These are some no-nonsense socks but they come in very whimsical shapes!

I don’t know how they do it, but Trumpette socks are more rugged than the average baby sock. They stay put longer, and they also have tougher bottoms with some no-slip traction to help guard against kitchen floor spills.

But the best part about Trumpette is the socks are simply adorable. Each variety is styled like a cute shoe - like Mary Janes, or ballerina slippers. There’s even a camo variety for the boys. These baby socks are perfect for gift-giving too, because they come in cute boxes of six that are artistic in their own right.

Monday, March 31st, 2008

We do a have a lot of beliefs on teeth whitening and whitening teeth but not all that we believe are facts, they may be just misconceptions only. Teeth whitening will not make crowns, bridges, veneers, filling and bondings whiten as to the myth that if we undergo a teeth whitening everything will be whiten. Another misconception that we do is people at any age can whiten their teeth. Children and adults have a very large tooth nerve chamber and with this they may experience an increased in sensitivity and more likely may encounter problems , that is why teeth whitening is not being recommended by dentist.
Another misconception that commonly do have is that dentists are the only one can get our teeth to its maximum white. But it based on a certain,in study they had proven that teeth whitening done by a dentist and a home bleaching didn’t made any difference and both treatments resulted to a healthy gums. After a teeth whitening treatment the color of the teeth is not permanent, this contradicts with our misconception that if your teeth are already lighter then you don’t need to do it again. The stability of the teeth color depends on your dental hygiene and your consumption of foods or drinks that contributes to the staining of the teeth.
For teeth whitening that really works consider having a natural teeth whitening product that is safe and effective to use for they do not contain harsh ingredients that may irritate your skin and gums.

Mother’s Jewelry for Mother in Law

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Buying a gift for my mother in law is never easy. Her taste and mine are nothing alike, and we live far enough away from each other that I don’t know what she likes or needs. Recently, we decided to give her a piece of Mother’s jewelry. She was so pleased and touched by this gift. We were able to give her a beautiful reminder of all her children, including the two who have passed away. She wears it proudly and says she feels like her children are all around her now. I’m so glad we decided to give her this gift.

If you just listen to background music

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

If you just listen to background music, new shows, etc., you can use the cheap audio cables that come in the package with your audio components. But only if you are not too concerned about sound quality and what components you are hooking up to the cables. Usually you will invest about 5-7% of the systems cost in your cables. This is usually adequate. Several types and many brands of audio cables can be found.

People who want improved sound quality for listening can find something in their price range from cable specialists. Specialized cables provide optimum sound quality and are very sturdy. These are a better alternative to generic speaker cables which offer lower sound quality and aren’t as sturdy. Although the specialized cables may be affordable, the cost still could be several hundred dollars for the speaker cables or analog audio interconnects. Some people may find that the extra money spent is well worth the benefits of better sound and pride in owning the very best in audio equipment.

A cable has one basic purpose: transference of signal from point A to point B without interference. For audio frequencies the goal is minimization of loss through the control of Resistance, Capacitance, and Inductance. The four basic types of cables that can be used for these purposes are analog audio cables, audio video cables, audio speaker cables, and digital cables.

To pass analogue line level audio signal between components, RCA connections are employed. RCA audio cables are joined in stereo couples, with a connection for the right channel and one for the right channel of audio. For line level analogue connections it is a good idea to employ cables which have low capacitance and properly shielded to avoid interferences and external noises from getting to mix to the signal.

The most important cables are video cables as very high frequency signals travel through them. Audio video cables provide proper impedance, adequate shielding and solid terminations found with high frequency, and the right type of cable can be critical. So the shielding and maintenance of the proper characteristic impedance need to be aspects of a video cable.

Audio Speaker cables are generally quite thick, with two conductors. At the tip they may be tipped with metal pins, banana plugs, spade plugs, or even just bare wire. When connecting it is necessary to ensure closest and tightest possible connection from cable to amp or loudspeaker in order to minimize contact resistance. It is also important to remember that the speaker cable runs should be kept as short as possible and not to loop excess cable as it can potentially increase cable inductance.

Audio cables come in two different types and are usually a single cable. The first type is an optical cable; it transmits digital audio signals as pulses of light. The second form is coaxial cables look like standard analog cables, but what they do is transfer digital audio signals.

Although there are many types of audio cables, expensive ones are not necessary if listening to background music and radio broadcasts etc. The job of the cable is to pass the signal from source to output minimizing any interference. Paired RCA cables, preferably low in capacitance and resistance should be used for line level analog interconnects. Audio video cables should have adequate shielding as a high frequency signal is used. Audio speaker cable needs to be secured tightly to ensure low contact resistance. Special digital cables are available namely, coaxial and optical which transmit light pulses and digital signals respectively.

Introduced as Iridescent Ware in 1907 carnival glass acquired

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Introduced as Iridescent Ware in 1907, carnival glass acquired that name unofficially from collectors in the 1950s. This marvelous glassware acquired its nickname from the metallic layer on its outside, which constantly changed colors. Iridescent Ware was made in ornately patterned molds, and was sprayed with a mixture of metallic salts before it had started to cool, which allowed for the color-changing effects that gave the glass its fame.

Carnival glass is a colored, inexpensive pressed glass that was used to make both functional and ornamental objects. It can be found in a wide range of iridescent colors. Carnival glass is sometimes called dope glass by glass workers because doping is the process of applying the color to the glass surface. Carnival glass production started in 1907. It was used in production of many different pieces and in more than 150 patterns. However, since it did not command the prices expected, it was subsequently discounted.

This glass is made in many translucent colors like primarily amethyst, marigold, cobalt, green, and red. It is also made in opaque white, which is referred to as milk glass. Before the hazards of radiation were well known, the glass was also made in semi-transparent or translucent pale green and was named as Vaseline or uranium glass. Vaseline glass and uranium glass contain traces of uranium salts in the glass which can make a faint green glass glow in reaction to UV light.

Millersburg glass Company is one of the largest producers of this kind of glass. Crystals were the first glass products of the company. But they decided to go for iridescent glassware to ride the wave of enthusiasm. So, during the early 1910, the line of Radium Glassware was brought out by Millersburg glass Company.

Carnival glass has become a popular item for collectors. Some pieces are worth pennies, but hard-to-find pieces can bring in hundreds or even thousands of dollars, making for a wide range in prices. The market is jumping for this antique glass collectible .

The carnival glass is very difficult to identify. Unfortunately, most of the manufacturers avoid including a maker’s mark in their product. Others did so only for part of the time they manufactured the glass. The process of identification involves matching of patterns, colors, sheen, edges, thickness, factors found in old manufacturer’s trade catalogs and other known examples, or other reference material. Identifying this glass has become a challenge even to experts since many manufacturers produced duplicates of their rivals’ popular patterns.

At the time of introduction in late 1907 the carnival glass was called as Iridescent Ware. The prices of this glass vary widely depending on their quality and availability. This glass is a highly collectible item with some of the pieces worth very little, while other, rarer items command thousands of dollars. There is a very active market for this item since it has become an antique glass collectible. Among the greatest producers of this type of glass was millersburg glass in Ohio. It is very hard to identify these products, because the makers didn’t consistently mark their work.

symptoms of carpal tunnel disorder

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Recently, however, the symptoms of carpal tunnel disorder have been associated with more general problems with posture caused by a sedentary lifestyle and jobs during which you don’t move around much. Physical therapists, previously rarely consulted by doctors treating carpal tunnel syndrome, have developed a number of exercises that address not your hands, but your general posture habits, going by the theory that our interconnected joint and muscle systems can cause problems far away from the core of the problem. The results have been promising.

Carpal Tunnel Exercise #2: The Tilt

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Using cushions and a board, fashion a ramp at the angle of one wall so that when you stand flat on the ramp facing the wall, your ankles form a 45 degree angle to your shins. Holding the wall for balance, stand on this ramp flat footed and align your back, shoulders over pelvis, pelvis over knees, knees over ankles. Hold this position for a count of 20, then step down and repeat. This is one of several carpal tunnel exercises that are good for repairing poor rotational posture.

Instantaneous water heaters also known as tankless water heaters

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Instantaneous water heaters, also known as tankless water heaters, use less electricity, because they only produce hot water when it is needed. The old-style tank water heater uses a lot of electricity to produce hot water that is never used or that stands so long it experiences heat loss. Using a Takagi Flash Series tankless water heater will produce plenty of hot water while using less electricity and saving you money.

The standby heat losses that occur in storage water heaters do not occur in Takagi Flash Series water heaters, because cold water does not enter the heater until hot water is required. The cold water is heated by a gas fired burner or by electric elements. Thus, a constant supply of hot water can be supplied by a Takagi Flash Series tankless water heater because no hot water is stored within the heater.

The type of heater that is to be installed is dependent on three key factors: Fuel type, location and size, demand and application. Takagi Flash Series heaters can be purchased in models that run on either gas or electricity. When purchasing a Takagi Flash Series tankless water heater, carefully consider the temperature of incoming water. (This is related to location and climate.) Also consider the demands of hot water and the areas where the hot water will be needed.

There are some cons also if you buy Takagi Flash Series water heaters. They require longer time for providing hot water as they don’t start heating the water until the faucet is turned on. But using a specialized pump can solve this problem and can provide the water in half the time.

Since water needs to be run for a longer duration, the problem of increase in its wastage arises. However, a specialized pumping system can check this issue. This system has the dual advantage of water conservation and availability of unlimited supply of hot water.

When you buy Takagi Flash Series water heaters, they will save energy and thus money. This is mainly due to the reduction in amount spent on standby losses. On an average, water heating accounts for 20% of a household’s annual energy expenditures. The annual operating costs for electric or conventional gas water heaters average $450 or $200, respectively.

Instantaneous water heaters, also known as tankless water heaters, use less electricity, because they only produce hot water when it is needed. The old-style tank water heater uses a lot of electricity to produce hot water that is never used or that stands so long it experiences heat loss. If you buy Takagi Flash Series tankless water heater it will produce plenty of hot water while using less electricity and saving you money. Buy Takagi Flash Series water heaters since they have many advantages compared to a storage water heater. There are many factors which you need to consider when you buy Takagi Flash Series heaters.

Traditional treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Traditional treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome include pain medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, and large doses of vitamin B complex. To help the nerves and tendons heal, the hand may be immobilized by splints or braces to be worn during the night or day, or both. If nothing else works, and often nothing else does work, the doctor may prescribe surgery. Unfortunately, when surgery is performed, the scar tissue and underlying problems usually only alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome for a short period of time; the problem will creep back.

Carpal Tunnel Exercise #1: Knee Ball Squeeze

Friday, March 28th, 2008

This carpal tunnel exercise is designed to correct poor spinal posture and straighten rotational posture problems. Sit with no back support on a stool or forward in a chair with your spine straight, shoulders centered over your pelvis. The seat should be at such a height that, with your feet flat on the floor, your thighs are at a right angle to your spine, and your shins should be at a right angle to your hips. Place a small rubber ball (about 8″ in diameter) between your knees. Squeeze knees together slowly, using your inner thigh muscles. Do 3 sets of 15. This exercise may be uncomfortable or feel unnatural to you; that indicates that it is treating the correct problem and the discomfort should go away as the problem is alleviated. If real pain begins anywhere and does not go away during the exercise, stop immediately.

You can also do this exercise while lying on the floor, your legs on the stool so that you make the same two 90 degree angles.

Good News for people don’t need to have carpal

Friday, March 28th, 2008

The good news is that you don’t have to have carpal tunnel surgery to be released from the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome. That’s because it’s not generally the repetitive motion itself that causes your carpal tunnel, but rather a number of other bad habits we have developed in a modern world that, together, cause our bodies to move or not move in ways that are unnatural to us. Think about it. A hundred and fifty years ago, people copied documents by hand, sewed or knitted for hours, wove, and did just as much with their hands as we do today. Yet they did not typically have carpal tunnel problems.

The difference is: they moved around a lot. Housework, farmwork, walking, climbing, all those things kept their bodies moving. Moreover, they moved in natural ways that have been around for centuries.

All our muscles and bones and tendons are connected. If you misalign your back out of habit, you may knock your shoulder out of whack. If your shoulder begins to ache, you hold your hand differently. The tendons that connect from top to bottom don’t quite align right. And slowly but inexorably, the very sensitive system that makes up your hand is damaged.

By using a series of exercises to repair your posture, and by practicing them diligently for a long period of time, you can repair that damage. You can retrain your body to balance itself properly, correcting years of damage. And you can make your carpal tunnel problems fade away, without surgery.
