What Homeschoolers Need to Know About Homeschool Burnout
Homeschooling parents hold great responsibility and therefore every once in a while, they are bound to experience homeschool burnout. Homeschooling, even during normal circumstances, can be challenging. Homeschooling while experiencing one of life’s speed bumps, such as an unexpected illness, can be outright stressful. It’s crucial that you are able to recognize when you’ve hit homeschool burnout and that you can spend some time to devise solutions for the problem.
Homeschool burnout can occur for many reasons. Sometimes it stems from changed circumstances, whether it’s a new baby, an illness or other unexpected events, and these changes create stress in our lives. The stress inevitably affects your homeschooling responsibilities. The smart thing to do is to recognize that you are going through a difficult time and accept the fact that you need a break. There is nothing wrong with taking a break even if it’s from your own children. In fact, most often breaks help us refresh our enthusiasm and motivation and return to our responsibilities with new energy.
Sometimes, the cause of homeschool burnout is parents packing too many activities into the week. If this is the case for you, then ask your children to choose their favourite one or two activities and put the rest on hold. If you’re experiencing homeschool burnout because of other responsibilities that are demanding your attention, then get someone to take over some of the homeschool work. You can ask a family member or friend to take over a couple of subject. You can even consider hiring a tutor. Also, don’t forget your homeschool parenting group, a great resource for finding good advice and even a helping hand when you really need one.
