You can find a lot of possible relations between gum infections and other disease all over the body. According to the studies there may be a link between gum diseases, heart disease and other health conditions and they propose that gum infection may be more serious risk factor for heart disease than hypertension, cholesterol, smoking, age and gender. That’s why people who have gum infection have a larger risk for heart attacks and stroke. Since our oral health affects our overall health thus paying attention to our oral health can prevent gum infection and certain medical conditions that are linked with it.

Gum disease is best explained as the infection of the tissues and bones holding our teeth in place. Gum disease is also called as periodontal disease in dental community. There are two types of gum diseases namely gingivitis which is the mild cases of gum disease. The other one is called periodontitis, the worst condition for your oral health. In this stage of gum disease, your bone and tissues that is holding your tooth in place is now severely damage. Our mouth is already a home to hundreds and hundreds of bacteria that is why regular tooth brushing is very beneficial way of preventing gum disease.

There are many types of gum diseases but the mildest periodontal disease is called Gingivitis. When gingivitis occurs, your gums will become red, swollen, and it will bleed easily. During this stage of gingivitis, there will be no discomfort or pain you will notice. This type of periodontal disease is commonly cause by an inadequate oral hygiene or a bacterial infection in the gums. Although there is no accurate research that shows why gingivitis develops, there are several theories that exist. For those suffering from this type of gum disease, there is no need to worry too much for this is just a mild case and can be treated with a good oral home care.
